Most cult-brand products in market sell the manipulation as the feature.

The phrases get used unironically. Mind control. Unbreakable bond. Desperate-to-buy loyalists. The frameworks underneath are mostly fine. Douglas Atkin and BJ Bueno did the work decades ago. The application is where the genre goes sideways.

Members who can't leave are not a cult-brand outcome. Calling them one is a category error that costs founders their reputation roughly two years out, when the manufactured loyalty curdles into refund chains and contempt threads.

The framework works better when members can leave. Cultures built on shared identity compound. Cultures built on bounded choice collapse the moment someone wakes up.

This skill takes the same seven-element model and inverts the ethical premise. Six guardrails lifted from Janja Lalich's bounded-choice research function as enforceable code. If an output trips any of them, it gets revised. "But it would work" does not override the rule.

    Pre-flight check

    Five gating conditions before the workshop begins. Founder conviction, time horizon, revenue stability, three existing seed believers, and a hard disqualifier for pre-launch brands. Stops the work before it wastes anyone's time.

    Diagnostic before prescription

    Scores the brand 0–3 across all seven elements with required evidence per score. No recommendations are generated until the diagnostic is on the page. "Vibes" do not count toward a score.

    Element interaction map

    Names the four natural amplification pairs (Mind+Conflict, Practices+Artifacts, Exposure+Aesthetics, Protagonists+Mind) and the three common weak-together failures. Halves diagnostic time.

    First-move templates per element

    Cheapest, lowest-risk first build for each of the seven elements. The 90-day plan stops being a wish list. Resists the 'build all seven in week one' tax that crushes founder attention.

    Six hard ethical guardrails

    Lifted from Janja Lalich's bounded-choice research. Exit cost, information symmetry, no identity gatekeeping by price, no isolation from outside relationships, no exploitation of psychological vulnerability, asymmetric responsibility.

    Measurement framework

    Leading indicators (weeks 4–12) and lagging indicators (months 6–24). Four vanity metrics you should stop tracking immediately. The failure signal of strong vanity with weak leading indicators, which is the worst commercial position to defend.

  7. 07

    Founder objection responses

    Six predictable pushbacks ("we need revenue this quarter," "our customers are too diverse for a single Mind") with direct counters you can use in workshops. Skip the rediscovery work every project.

Is this just the Cult Operating System repackaged?+

The seven-element structure comes from a shared lineage: Atkin, Bueno, Ragas, and anthropological cultural analysis dating back to Geertz and Douglas. The application discipline, ethical guardrails, diagnostic workflow, first-move templates, and measurement framework are not. Frameworks aren’t proprietary IP. Application is where the work happens.

Why is the SKILL.md free?+

Because the framework is synthesised from public research and shouldn’t be gated. Charging for synthesised public-domain frameworks is what makes the cult-brand genre uncomfortable in the first place. The paid tiers cover work that actually took time to build.

Does this work for B2B?+

Yes. The seven elements apply to any customer base with identity-level engagement. The True Believer archetype for B2B is the champion buyer inside the account. The procurement signatory rarely qualifies.

Will this give me a cult following in 90 days?+

No. Be suspicious of anyone selling that timeline. Cultural commitment compounds over 3–7 years. The 90-day plan in this skill produces the first-move signals that tell you whether the cultural foundation is forming. Pretending otherwise produces forced output that fails the ethical guardrails.
